What type are you?

Not too long ago, I had a really interesting conversation with a former colleague of mine.
In that conversation he made it clear that there were 3 types of people in the corporate world :

Type A : the ones that work their ass off.

Type B : The ones that sit and do nothing and are happy about it. The type of people that get into their position by kissing ass, pretending to be someone they're not, or by having connections and getting where they want without really deserving it.

Type C : The ones that destroy other people's work. The type of people that have a degree in criticizing everyone else's work without bringing any of their own ideas to the table.

As a student you can already see in these 3 types of people in class; they are already being formed. You can tell this, not by looking at the grades or at their previous school achievements, but by their behavior: the way they talk, the way they consider people around them etc.

A small example I encountered of Type B : " This summer was great , I didn't do anything during my internship, I slept all the time."

I'm not going to cite any examples of Type C, but i think they're a lot more frequent then Type B's.

Changing to an different type is always possible.

Why Type A is the best :
Working all the time doesn't bother him or her. They love working and love being productive; work is an important priority.
At the end of the day, he or she likes to feel like something was accomplished, even though he or she might feel tired. There's this amazing feeling of accomplishment that surrounds that person.
All that feeling of accomplishment urges him or her to spread it, and at the same time brings on more challenges.
This amazing feeling of accomplishment is the adrenaline rush he or she will want to have systematically.
As a result great things are achieved.

Type A rocks!

Propose one type.
And then if it's better then Type A means Type A's can do better and I am looking forward to know what's the next level.
If it's not then Type A still rocks ;)

Type D: People Who want to make a difference and want to change for the better, but still do not have a clear vision of what they want in Life and have trouble being disciplined and focused. They end up having trouble committing to a project or a goal, because of an unclear outcome. They also have trouble narrowing their focus and eliminating distractions that do not lead them to what they ultimately want. Often times, they might end up succumbing to other people's agendas and demands.

Type E: Those who work hard yet realize that happiness can be achieved only by striving for balance in their life. They dedicate the time to develop themselves in their health, their relationships with people and their work. They figured something important in that by developing fulfilling relationships with people and by taking care of their health, they end up having much more energy mixed with a general sense of well being and in turn, are much more productive in their work.

Type F: Being successful and specialized in a certain area themselves, they offer value and actually teach and help other people who may or may not have bigger goals than they do. They also build a group constituting a variety of well established, successful and specialized range of people that help each other and build projects together.

Type G: the ones that work their ass off, but don't realize that someone else is taking all the credit and they end up not knowing why they didn't climb that ladder like the other dude who doesn't work half as much as they do! They fail to see the power games involved in corporations.

Type H: Those who work smart and productively. They have a precise goal they like to achieve and are slowly but surely gaining momentum. They do not fall for other people's agendas and avoid getting their hands dirty for other people, they also abide by their moral values and refuse to take part in a fraudulent project and instead suggest a better way of doing things by following the rules at the same time. They understand that business is highly competitive, yet they do not bend their moral code to achieve the end of a project. The end justifies the mean and if the mean didn't not contribute to the happiness of all parties, then the end will not either.

Really good points there Kal, I didn't think of type D.
I think that types E,G and H fall under Type A.
Getting to Type F isn't reached without getting before to somewhat something close to Type A.
Couldn't be better described, thanks!

I was also going to suggest that there were more types..
And also that the type of person you are doesnt always dictate a certain outcome; there are other factors involved.
I wanted to expand a bit on on the type G that Kal mentioned; the power of games involved in corporations.
Theres a really good book called: Games People Play by Eric Berne; it analyses psychological games and groups them into different types. So for example there are marital games, life games, party games, consulting room games etc. Its very interesting if anyone's curious.
A lot does depend on the kind of individual, but there are many external factors that can impede one from getting ahead.
we live in a world that seems to be even more corrupt as the day before, and there are many people that play dirty games to get ahead; and not always are the hard workers rewarded appropriatly.

Tania brings good points, The Book Game's People Play has been recommended to me quite a few times. There are plenty of other useful books, but here's a side of it all that you might not be aware of. In my opinion, I've gotten very convinced over the past several years, that a lot are quick to pull on that trigger of dehumanizing people, i.e. oversimplified stereotype classifying approach mixed with a "caricaturization" of evil. Furthermore, it puts people in a state of mind that every person has Machiavellian motives and in turn make the person over analyze situations (kind of like the effect you get after reading about many "conspiracy" theories).

Although this kind of approach is a good learning tool for people to recognize patterns and deal with them appropriately whether it be at work or in relationships, it has its downfalls and further research is often needed. More often then not, the authors lack credibility. From past experience, and I've read countless self help books, most of the time books in this category lack research and offer smart one liners (you might find hidden gems though). They are solely based on making profit $$$$ (catchy I-have-all-the-answers titles)... And don't be fooled, many of these authors have Phds, doesn't make the book any better! I'm even selling many of the self help books on my library shelf to used book stores, these books have proved over the past years to be unnecessary mind clutter! lol.

A small recommendation for anyone, always keep a critical eye when reading any book, realize that you will not find a book that will give you ALL the answers you are looking for and that you have to find your own answers... I do admit however that out of 10 "self help" books, you might find 2 that are reasonable, just be aware that whatever the author claims, doesn't make it the truth. The same applies for get rich quick books with a guy's face on the front cover with a nasty grin on his face ;)

Cheers'
